If you drive through Sedgefield on the N2 between George and Knysna the little town doesn't look like much, but turn off at the only traffic lights in town and take the road past the lagoon and to the Swartvlei mouth -- it's very scenic, and at Myoli Beach there is a long stretch of unspoilt beach. There is a beach bar called Pili-Pili, with a great vibe, frequented both by locals and by foreign youngsters who stay for a few days in the backpacker accommodation and participate in adventure sports such as paragliding and mountain biking in the forests. There's boating and fishing too, great birdwatching, and whales out in the bay in winter. Sedgefield is South Africa's first and so far only "slow town" and, appropriately, tortoises abound. Not much night-life, but a few decent restaurants. Great for relaxed family holidays. Lots of B&Bs and guest houses, We've been many times, so much so that we've now retired there.
